The first generation R230 appeared as the Safety Car for Formula One at the 2001 German Grand Prix in Hockenheim and soon after, the street version was unveiled with Mercédès quoting “the most powerful Mercedes Benz is ready for launch” being the 55 SL AMG.
The 2 door convertible was powered by a 5 litre V8 engine that makes 302 horse power. It featured an active body control offering a balance of comfort and handling; this complex system uses accumulators and hydraulic fluids to regulate the firmness and heights of the suspension.
The R230 was the first metal hardtop closing convertible that Mercedes built .This replaced the standalone metal hardtop from the predecessor, the R129, which we have also noticed are starting to appreciate and gaining the “classic car” status that some think it deserves.
The production of the R230 SL ran from 2001 to 2014 with all engines being petrol ranging from 3724cc to 5980cc this being the heart of the AMG found in the S65.
The roadster is a timeless designed car that says you’ve arrived before you even start your journey.
